Healthy Bowl of Yummy!

Like a true Indian my pantry is never out of dal (Lentils) and like a true Maharashtrian my tummy always craves for a bowl of “varan bhaat” and “tuup”! (Dal Rice and Ghee) And the 25% South Indian genes always scream RICE! But, for the past couple of days I have been trying really hard to cut down my rice consumption and go for healthier options instead. But then again, on a rainy day nothing satisfies your soul more than a bowl of garam garam Dal Rice! So on this rainy day I decided to ditch the rice and make some vegetable soup with masoor dal (Red Lentil) and served it with a crispy Bajri Khakra (Pearl Millet Crispy “Flatbread”). All in all, it was a meal made of a steamy bowl of yummy for a very happy tummy 😉








  • Olive Oil – 2 Tbs
  • White Onion – Half (Medium) Chopped
  • Fresh Ginger Garlic Paste – 1 Tbs
  • Curry Leaves – 5 to 6
  • Turmeric – 1/2 Tsp
  • Cumin Powder – 1 Tsp
  • Coriander Powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Assorted Veggies – 1 Cup (I used Carrots, Peas, Green Beans and Sweet Corn)
  • Masoor Dal (Red Lentil) – 1/2 Cup
  • Red Chili Powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chicken/ Vegetable Broth – 2 Cups
  • Cinnamon – Small Piece (1 inch long)
  • Spinach – 1/2 Cup (Optional )
  • Salt and Pepper – To Taste (I used 1 1/2 Tsp)
  • Fresh Coriander, Red Chilli Flakes and Lemon – To Garnish



  1. Wash and drain the masoor dal and set aside
  2. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan, add onion, ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute
  3. Add curry leaves, turmeric, cumin & coriander powder and fry for a few seconds
  4. Now add the veggies and drained masoor dal and mix well. Add chilli powder and fry for another minute
  5. Pour the chicken/ vegetable broth and bring the mixture to boil
  6. Add the cinnamon stick and spinach. Stir well
  7. Cover the boiling mixture and cook with the lid on for about 20 – 25 minutes
  8. Check if the dal is cooked, if not cook for another 5 – 10 minutes. Add more broth if required


Serve hot with fresh coriander and a dash of lime or lemon! 🙂
